Tips for Finding the Right Divorce Lawyer For You

Tips for Finding the Right Divorce Lawyer For You

Going through divorce and separation can be a hugely uncertain time and finding the right divorce lawyer to assist you through the process is a key decision to make.

In an age of information overload, it can feel daunting finding the right lawyer for you. Over the years I have worked with a whole range of individuals to help them through their divorce and separation and out the other side.

I have compiled a short list of top tips to consider when choosing the right divorce lawyer:

  1. Check review websites such as ReviewSolicitors – looking at online reviews and testimonials for individual divorce lawyers can be a very good way to get a sense of the experiences other people have had in instructing them. ReviewSolicitors is a website dedicated to collecting feedback in respect of solicitors and is a good place to start your research.
  2. Ask a trusted family member or friend for a recommendation – personal recommendations can be a good way to check the credentials of a divorce lawyer based on the experience of their other clients. However, that divorce lawyer may not be the best fit for everyone – each has their own style and approach to working with clients.
  3. Research law firm rankings and leading individual lawyers through online directories such as the Legal 500. The Legal 500 is the largest legal directory in the world. It assesses the strengths of law firms and their lawyers and produces 'rankings' and recognition for key individuals. Those rankings are respected within the legal industry and many lawyers pride themselves on the feedback and information that is showcased about them.
  4. Read the website bios for individual divorce lawyers – again this can be a good way to read about a divorce lawyer and what their specialisms are, what articles they have written and what awards and accreditations they may hold.

In finding the right lawyer for you and your circumstances, consider the lawyer's experience, specialism, delivery of service style and the type of relationship you wish to have with them. If you are facing divorce and have initial questions about new financial and child arrangements, Sills & Betteridge offer fixed fee 60 minute Preliminary Advice Meetings.
